This is the ceiling inside one of our non-temperature controlled storage units. Note the white insulation. This is reinforced, vinyl-back fiberglass insulation that helps keep your stored items cooler in the summer. The vinyl backing stops the insulation from dropping "dust".
The roof insulation works to place a barrier between the sun's heat on the metal roof and your stored items. Think of it as a "hot pad", helping to protect your stored items from a "broiler."
When shopping around, be sure and ask other storage facilities if they have insulation in their ceilings. We bet they don't. It costs a lot of money to insulate when constructing and its next to impossible to add. Most are unwilling to invest what it takes to build a quality property.
